I'm back a week later with a 2nd installment, as I find it interesting to take advantage of the media pull of the reality show about renovations. «Builder on the Run» for to highlight our profession: He Rigger and all its variants (Technical Architect, Building Engineer,…). You can watch yesterday's program at this Atresplayer link: Builder on the run episode II – #constructorGranada.
I already commented last week in the first article about Builder on the run, that as a spectator the program was interesting, but as a professional who has been working on construction sites for 12 years, I missed seeing some real figures that appear as technicians in all new construction in our country.

On this occasion, we met a couple from Granada who are thinking of expanding their family, so they are encouraged to give a change in the layout of your apartment. Since I am not an interior designer, I am not going to analyze something with little objectivity, so I am leaving you directly the link to the article of the studio that does the work for the program, so that you can see the before and after: Portobello Street – Program 2 – Builder on the Run
What do we find in #constructorGranada ?
Well, something that can unfortunately happen in this type of minor works: We advance money to the contractor to collect material, and disappears from the map like a sputnik. I would like to point out that the programme talks about 14,000 € for a complete renovation of an apartment that is being dismantled from top to bottom, including the partition walls. I don't know about Granada, but to me that amount doesn't seem to even come close to half of what is needed to do things in conditions that meet 21st century standards.
We return to the same old thing: «cheap is expensive»
I don't want to generalize on this subject, because there are technical professionals and contractors who offer affordable prices and are very professional; as well as there are shameless people on both sides of the respective guilds.

If we put ourselves in the situation of a Client who wants to renovate his apartmentI'm sure that the first thing you want is for everything to go as planned and for there to be no problems. But if we ask our close friends and family, who hasn't suffered delays, lack of seriousness, unmanageable finishes... in a small minor project?
It is also true that we tend to remember only the bad things and this is what we bring up in our circles. When you buy a car and it turns out bad, you spend all day cursing about the problems it causes you; but if it turns out great, you don't go around proclaiming how well it runs and the satisfaction it gives you when you drive it.
It is not a guarantee of success, but it does help a lot to have a Independent professional when we are going to do a comprehensive renovation in a home. Even more so when the total investment represents figures higher than what any average worker in our country earns annually. Let us bear in mind that by a small percentage higher than initially planned, We will forget about uncontrolled unforeseen events; inflated measurements or, directly, things that have not been done; aesthetic errors in the definition of critical areas; unnecessary investments in elements, when those amounts could be invested in other improvements that are more worthwhile (I could write a bible with the benefits).
#constructorGranada The same old story. The bricklayer-builder is contacted before a technician, even though it is a comprehensive reform…

And the most bleeding thing about this for our group is that Much of the population does not know what a Surveyor is. exactly (not even my mother would be able to explain it today if you ask her), the things we can do in the field of construction or consulting, and how useful we can be, giving a clear example, to a community of owners like Head technicians. Don't tell me that anyone you tell all this reality to won't end up almost convinced that you're right, even if they later hire someone else they end up liking better.
Surveyor: a person who makes a living. It is a definition that remained engraved in my memory at the School of Quantity Surveyors in Madrid (1999) when it was pronounced on the first day of class by the Professor of Materials I.
Therefore, I reiterate what I said the other day. While we fight so that our membership fees also serve to make the profession appear more in the media, for the best if possible; each and every one of the technicians who read this and other similar documents, We have to take the plunge and sell our skills to the public. that surrounds us. Because we can be very valuable like gold, but if the miner does not dig in the cave to bring it to light, it will remain there for all eternity.
#constructorgranada I miss Chicote sticking his hands into kitchen extractors and removing kilos of tar…
