Secrets of a good home renovation (Part I)

I want to resume the blog entries by commenting on something about the reforms that individuals make in their homes; the idea is avoid potential problems during the course of the work.

A few days ago, I was visiting a house where the finishing defects They upset the owner. He therefore had to consider having an expert report made to claim everything he did not agree with.

Common mistake: just because we are citizens of this world and have extensive experience in living at home, unfortunately We don't know everything about her.

By this I mean that hiring masonry, plumbing, electrical work..., whose The financial outlay is considerable, is not something that anyone knows how to carry out successfully. Calling 4 builders on the phone to ask for a quote is not the only thing that a professional who knows how to manage and carry out works does. But sometimes, this and paying are the only things that a homeowner worries about when he wants some work done in his house. It is common to forget to compare different quotes and to point out what is not entirely clear in them, which, as a rule, are several things.

I don't want to generalize, but I get the feeling that the only thing that is looked at and checked is the final price of the works. Falsifying measurements in a billed item by square metres can greatly increase the current account of a parquet installer (with respect to this group), simply because of not knowing how to check whether the figures indicated there are true or false.

We are talking about the tip of the iceberg. We could go into the description of each of the items we are going to hire; speaking in plain English, if we are going to plaster, paint, change doors, etc. Examples:

  1. Measuring with a continuous tape is not the same as measuring by subtracting gaps.
  2. A custom-made door made of solid walnut wood for our 19th century home is not the same as a chipboard door finished in white lacquered paper. They are different (both serve to move from one side to the other and to close or open) and their prices have little or nothing in common.
  3. Snow white is not the same color as off-white.
  4. Choosing paint by mixing dye is something my grandfather may have done after the civil war, but today, there is nothing more convenient than a color chart; and if you need more paint, you can have it made knowing that the 100% will have the color identical.

And then when we see the final result, we put our hands to our heads and the result is far from resembling the house of our dreams: walls with plaster leaking; windows placed “in that way”; doors with a finger’s worth of room on the floor; fitted wardrobes that become modules with measurements little or nothing like our original space; redesign of tiles and tiles without any care…, should I continue?

Surely this and many other problems have happened to you or someone close to you.

If you want to know how to solve these problems, don't miss the continuation in the next delivery.

I would like to state that there are many good contractors, with and without technicians on their staff, so I ask that good professionals do not take what I have just expressed in this post as a reference.

I encourage you to comment on this matter, and/or share your own experiences with renovations you have made in your homes.

Likewise, it is of great help to me if you share this on your social networks. Keep in mind that even if it doesn't help you, there may be someone in your circle who is having a similar problem. Logically, if I gain a client, I will be grateful to you and I won't deny anyone a Christmas card 😉
